AUT-HUN cemetery round Doberdo

Hello everyone,

I am looking for an AUT-HUN cemetery round Doberdo (IT) where my great-grandfather "Rudolf Breza" has a small monument.

He went in 1914 from Brno (Czech Rep.) to Graz (from there his family got last message - a postcard). In 1915 he was killed (according to a story it was not in a battle).

After many years a friend of his son has military service in Doberdo and visited the cemetery...but we don´t know exactly where.

Do you have any idea where to try to find the monument? I am planning to visit the place but as I know there is many cemeteries. Or does it exist a database of single names which are on monuments?

He was probably buried in one of many former cemeteries in Doberdobski Dol valley, which was in the rear area till sixth isonzo battle.
Today those cemeteries are empty and we can find only few monuments or their remains, but mostly Italian, because after sixth battle there was Italian rear area. So, the big part of that cemeteries in the valley are (were) Italian.

In these days you can find only two former AH cemeteries:
- big cemetery in Vižintini and
- small cemetery between Gorjupa kupa and Debeli vrh.

Today all remains from AH cemeteries in area around Doberdob are ,most probably situated in Prosek (Prosecco). Here exactly.

Now it will be easier to find out where the small monument is. And if I will find my great-grandfather small monument, I´ll let you know!

Are you sure about that small monument? There are no monuments in former cemeteries today.
In what period was son of his friend in Doberdo situated?

I hope a small monument or something with his name exists because the cemetery visited 2 family friends and both said that great-grandfather´s name is still visible and the place is close to gate.
It´s all what I know, both family friends died many years ago. And when they visited the place? I suppose it´s 20 years at least.

In this case you should check AH cemetry in Fogliano (Foljan), which is nearest to the Doberdo, but i don't know how your great-grandfather arrived there.

I hope you will find gravestone with right name on it.

Maybe you should contact Schwarze Kreuz in Austria ? You should ask them about your Grand Fathers grave ? Or contact Military Archive in Wien. Query cost about 30-50 euro, but sometimes you'll receive all informations about military service of Your Grandpa, his death and localization of grave.
Try to find in which regiment Your ancestor served. Comparison of date of death and some ODB will tell You where the regiment were in that time.
