Slovenia commemorates Russian victims of WWI
A meeting of Slovenian and Russian politicians has taken place in Slovenia, as a sign of friendship between the two countries.
The meeting was held in a place called Vrsic in Slovenia’s northwest, near a Russian chapel.
In 1916, Russian prisoners of war were buried under a snow slip while crossing a mountain pass in Vrsic. The chapel was build by Russians in the early 20th century to commemorate them.
The Russian delegation was held by deputy speaker of the Russian parliament’s upper house Yuri Vorobyov, and the Slovenian – by Prime Minister Janez Jansa.
Besides politicians, clergymen and public figures were also present. A church service was held to commemorate Russians who died here during WWI.
“Initially, this chapel was a symbol of mourning,” Prime Minister Jansa said. “Now, it is a symbol of Russian-Slovenian friendship.”
